When good leaders accidentally sabotage their teams

by | Mar 26, 2025

Throughout my years developing leaders globally, I’ve noticed a surprising pattern: many leadership mistakes don’t come from bad intentions, but from good ones taken too far.

Here are four ways well-meaning leaders unintentionally undermine their effectiveness:

1) Empathy Overload: Caring deeply about your team is vital but excessive empathy can cloud judgment and prevent necessary tough decisions. Balance understanding with the courage to act.

2) The Yes Trap: Strong leaders want to help everyone but saying yes to everything means delivering on nothing. True leadership requires the discipline to prioritize ruthlessly.

3) Solving Others’ Problems: Jumping in to fix every challenge feels helpful but creates dependency. Great leaders coach their teams to solve their own problems.

4) Avoiding Clear Accountability:  Fearing they’ll be seen as controlling, many leaders shy away from clear expectations. But accountability isn’t about control, it’s about empowerment.

P.S. Which of these mistakes have you made?
